10 tricks to staying motivated

17 Jan

As we saw last week, getting motivated to work on a goal or task is the hard part.  The other (slightly less hard) part is staying motivated when you don’t have that same rush of excitement that comes from getting started.

Maybe something new has landed on your desk at work, and it takes priority over your previous goal.  Maybe you skipped working on the task for a couple days, and now you can’t get back into it.  Maybe it was harder than you thought it was, and you got discouraged.

If you can just get yourself excited again (and again, and again), you’ll accomplish the task.  But if you give up, you won’t make it.  Ultimately, the choice is yours: achieve your goal, or quit.  Here are 10 tricks to staying motivated and achieving success.

7 secrets of getting motivated

10 Jan

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” – Mark Twain

A man pulling a semi truckHave you ever watched the strongman competition where they pull a truck?  A 300 pound guy is harnessed to a 30,000 pound semi truck and trailer.  In metric terms, that’s about 140 kg pulling 14,000 kg.  The truck is behind him, and he has a rope in front of him so he can use his arms as well as his legs.

It seems like an impossible task, getting 100 times your own weight to move.  I know I couldn’t do it.  But the burly dude leans forward, pulling with his arms and pushing with his legs.  He strains and struggles for a few seconds.  But then he breaks through the inertia and gets the truck rolling, and momentum makes the job of pulling the truck much easier.

It’s the same way for you and me in the office.  Often the hardest part of completing a task or accomplishing a goal is just getting started.

A good start builds momentum that you can sustain for a long time. If you start out right, you have a much better chance of succeeding.  Here are 7 secrets to getting motivated: Read the rest of this entry »

How to cope with a critical manager

03 Jan

Does your boss constantly point out your mistakes?  Can she find fault in everything you do?  If so, you probably have a critical manager.  As a perfectionist, she feels it is her duty to point out everyone’s flaws.

Over time, that constant criticism chips away at your sense of self-worth.  Combine that with a boss who refuses to recognize your contributions at work, and you’re definitely in a toxic situation.

Some signs that you work for a critical manager:

  • You feel like you can’t do anything well, in your manager’s opinion
  • You spend a lot of time checking your work to avoid mistakes
  • You worry most of the time about what faults your boss will point out
  • Even when you accomplish something, it’s never enough
  • You avoid your boss so you don’t have to hear his criticism

But you can cope with a critical boss.  Below are some suggestions for disengaging from your critical boss, not taking the criticism personally, and dealing with a critical manager. Read the rest of this entry »
